Characteristic properties help us identify pure substances or the group it belongs to. Non-characteristic properties cannot help us identify pure substances or the group it belongs to.
For example, a person's fingerprints are a characteristic property as people have unique DNA (unless they are identical twins). A non-characteristic property of people would be hair colour.
