Characteristic Properties of Matter
Characteristic properties help us:
1) determine the substance
2) determine the usage of the substance, and
3) predict the effects of a substance on the environment.
In Science, characteristic properties would be
1. Density
2. pH
3. Melting Point
4. Boiling Point
5. Electrical Conductivity
6. Thermal Conductivity
7. Solubility
8. Hardness
1-Density: The relationship between mass and volume.
It is the mass per unit of volume measured in g/mL or g/cm cubed
Found using the formula D = m/v mass divided by volume.
2-pH: What is pH?
There are two ways we find pH:
1) Use red and blue litmus to determine if a substance is an acid or base.
2) Use universal indicator paper to find the specific pH of a substance.
Why is pH important in our lives?
How to use Red Cabbage as an indicator for an acid or base.
3-Melting Point
The temperature at which a solid turns to a liquid (change of state).
4-Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas (change of state).
